About Central Kitsap School District

The Central Kitsap School District covers a 110 square-mile area is located in and around Silverdale, Washington. The District serves about 12,030 (as of May 2007) students in Kindergarten through Grade 12. Silverdale is located in the heart of the western Puget Sound region and is considered to be one of the most livable areas in the country. Central Kitsap offers a balanced lifestyle with easy access to Seattle and excellent recreational opportunities including saltwater and lake fishing, water and snow skiing, golfing, and boating in large protected waterways.

Three Navy bases are the area’s major employers and impact Central Kitsap’s student population: the Naval Submarine Base, Bangor; the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Keyport Division; and the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton. Twenty-six percent of the District’s students are military family dependents and fifty percent are children of families economically dependent on the Navy. Bangor and Keyport provide a national and state award-winning partnership program supporting local schools.

The District has two high schools serving Grades 10 to 12, one secondary school serving Grades 7 to 12, three junior high schools serving Grades 7 to 9, three satellite programs, twelve elementary schools, and a home-school support program.  In addition, the District offers learning opportunities in a non-traditional setting for both junior high and high school students through our Alternative programs.

The District employs approximately 1,640 certificated and classified staff and its annual operating budget is $110 million–– including $12.8 million in local levy dollars and $10.8 million in Federal Impact Aid.

About CK's Test Scores

CK and its schools review test data and classroom assessments annually to identify teaching strategies and staff development that will continuously improve student achievement at all grade levels.

  • CK has seen steady gains in the percent of students meeting standards on WASL over the past seven years.
  • About 80% of CK Students are meeting the WASL reading standard at grades 4, 7, and 10.
  • In 2005, CKSD average SAT scores for graduating seniors were above the state and the nation.
  • CK continues to run a strong Advanced Placement program offering college level courses in the high school.  In 2004-05, there were 1,427 enrollments in AP classes, and students took more than 1,000 AP tests.
  • Although CK students account for about 1 ½ percent of high school students state-wide, our students account for 20-30% of the chemistry and physics AP tests taken in the state of Washington.

About CK's Technology

CK uses technology as an integral part of its instructional program and communications system. The District has Local Area Network (LAN) systems in all of its schools and departments and a Wide Area Network (WAN) system connecting the entire District.

Teachers and support staff have computers for tracking student information and for planning and preparing classroom instruction. Teachers and students also have access to the Internet and to video equipment as part of the instructional program. CK provides teachers and support staff with free classes in the use of computer programs for a variety of classroom and organizational needs.

About CK's Staff Development Program

CK has a comprehensive staff development program designed to support individual and organizational professional growth. The program assists teachers and other staff in helping students meet the challenging learning requirements--or essential learnings--set by the District and the state. CK staff development opportunities promote Powerful Teaching and Learning at all instructional levels.

  • CK has a mentoring program for teachers new to the profession and the District.
  • Job-embedded staff development is offered at each school site. These services provide opportunities for instructional coaching, professional collaboration and self-reflection, and training around current pedagogical research and brain-based instructional strategies.
  • Free classes are provided throughout the school year to support professional development in a variety of instructional techniques, curriculum, and technology.
  • A Summer Institute provides instructional staff and others with an opportunity to expand skills. Class topics include integrating the Internet into the classroom, strategies to prepare students for the WASL, software explorations, using District and state resources to help students prepare for the WASL, and grade-level classroom strategies to improve instruction in reading, math, and writing.

About CK's Special Programs

CK has a number of educational program choices for parents and students. Elementary programs are the K-6 Montessori Program; K-6 TEAM Program with high levels of parent involvement; and self-contained classrooms for gifted students in grades 1 through 8.

Secondary choices include a magnet junior high gifted educational program, extensive career/technical classes, and a comprehensive high school Advanced Placement program in ten academic areas including history, math, physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, and foreign languages.

CK has an Alternative Program for students needing a nontraditional educational program. An Off Campus Program supports parents who choose to educate their children at home.

About CK's Community Engagement

CK has a long-standing tradition of involving parents and the community in its educational program and decision-making process. Parent involvement is an important part of each student’s academic success. CK and its schools have a variety of resources and educational opportunities to help families support their child’s learning at home.

The award winning U.S. Navy Personal Excellence through Cooperative Education (PECE) program partners area commands with every school in the District. Annually, parent, Navy, and community volunteers donate thousands of hours in a variety of projects and programs in our schools.
