Rich Newell just doesn't stop.
His enthusiasm for teaching has earned him deep
respect and admiration from students and
colleagues. Lately, it's also been earning him
some awards.
In May, Rich was named Teacher of the Year for
CKSD. On September 6, 2012, the Olympic Educational Service District named him
Regional Teacher of the Year. (The area covers
15 school districts in Clallam, Jefferson,
Kitsap and Mason counties.)
Rich is a longtime Spanish teacher at CKHS,
where Principal Steve Coons is not at all
surprised by this latest honor.
"Rich Newell is an engaging and masterful
teacher who is able to get the best out of
students learning a second language," said
Steve. "Through his wit, intellect, and
bi-cultural experiences, he is able to bring the
experiences of another language and culture
alive for his students. Rich has truly earned
the status of being a teacher of the year."
Rich has
been with CKSD for the past 25 years. He's also
served as the chair for the world language
department for 21 years.
Students love Rich's ability to make learning
fun. His approach involves humor, sharing
lessons from personal experience, and building
relationships.
"Rich's wisdom and passion for teaching are an
inspiration," said Superintendent Greg Lynch.
"We're so proud he's part of our district."
What's next for Rich Newell? He's now eligible
for entry into the State Teacher of the Year
competition. Those results will be announced
later this fall. Buena suerte, Señor Newell!
