HONORING OUR NATIVE AMERICAN GRADUATES

Central Kitsap School District invites parents and community members to its 2012 Native American Honoring Ceremony. The ceremony will be held on Monday, May 7, at 6:30 p.m. in the Klahowya Secondary School Auditorium.

CKSD SUPER SATURDAY 2012

On April 28, Central Kitsap School District junior high and high school students will participate once again in the annual Super Saturday event. Beginning at 10:00 a.m., students will take part in cleanup and service projects around their campuses and throughout the community.

GATES MILLENNIUM SCHOLARSHIP WINNER

Zach Duarte, a senior at Central Kitsap High School, is one of just 1,000 students nationwide to receive a coveted Gates Millennium Scholarship Award for 2012. Zach is CKHS’s third recipient of this award in the last four years.

Families and community members are invited to attend the CKSD Black History Month celebration on Wednesday, February 29, at 6:00 p.m. in the Olympic High School Forum.

 

2012-13 KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION

Central Kitsap School District will begin kindergarten registration for the 2012-13 school year on Monday, February 27. Families should check with their neighborhood elementary school for kindergarten registration information.

 

CKSD MONTESSORI INFORMATION NIGHT

The Central Kitsap School District Montessori Program will host its annual Parent Information Night on Thursday, February 23, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

During its meeting on November 22, the CKSD Board of Directors voted to place a Supplemental School Support Levy measure on the February 14, 2012, ballot.

 

PUBLIC HEARING ON DIRECTOR DISTRICT BOUNDARIES

CKSD is redrawing its director district boundaries following the receipt of 2010 federal census data. A public hearing will be held during the School Board meeting scheduled for Tuesday, November 22.

COLLEGE AND CAREER NIGHT 2011

Central Kitsap High School, Klahowya Secondary School and Olympic High School will co-host a College and Career Night for students and parents on Wednesday, October 5, beginning at 5:45 p.m. The event will be held in the Central Kitsap High School cafeteria.

 

BOARD APPROVES USE OF RESERVES

The Board of Directors approved a transfer of funds from the district’s reserves in order to hold elementary class sizes to an increase of five students spread over grades K-3. This reserve fund – the Committed Minimum Fund Balance – is required by board policy to maintain an ongoing savings equal to three percent of the district’s budgeted revenue.

 

CKSD ANNOUNCES FALL COMMUNITY BUDGET MEETINGS

CKSD is seeking community feedback as a vital part of its budget development process for 2012-13. The first opportunities to participate in this process are during the community budget meetings scheduled for this fall.

PRELIMINARY MSP AND HSPE SCORES RELEASED

Preliminary results from the spring High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE) and Measurements of Student Progress (MSP) were released by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. The tests measure students' knowledge in reading, writing, mathematics and science.

 

CKJH CHEER SQUAD TAKES TOP HONORS

The Central Kitsap Junior High Cheer Squad made a strong showing at the 2011 National Cheerleaders Association Cheer Camp.

 

CKSD RECEIVES $2.5 MILLION GRANT

The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Educational Partnership has awarded a $2.5 million grant to Central Kitsap School District.

 

2011-12 BUDGET HEARING

Central Kitsap School District invites community members to learn about the 2011-12 budget during a budget hearing on August 24. This hearing will provide participants with the opportunity to comment on the budget.

TWO SCHOOLS NAMED TO LIST OF "AMERICA'S BEST HIGH SCHOOLS"

Central Kitsap High School (CKHS) has earned a spot on the annual list of the nation's top-rated public high schools for the ninth time, and Klahowya Secondary School (KSS) was listed for the second time in the school's history.

The Washington Higher Education Coordinating Board has named four Central Kitsap School District students as Washington Scholars for 2011.

 

ALL-DISTRICT ORCHESTRA CONCERT

Central Kitsap School District will present its annual All-District Orchestra Concert at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, at Klahowya Secondary School.

NOVEMBER BALLOT WILL INCLUDE THREE CKSD SCHOOL BOARD DIRECTOR POSITIONS

This fall, school boards across the state will ask citizens to vote on school board director positions. The Central Kitsap School District will have three seats up for election. All seats are four-year terms.

 

KSS STUDENTS ARE FIRST-EVER STATE HISTORY BOWL CHAMPIONS
The varsity History Bowl team from Klahowya Secondary School completed its inaugural season undefeated (8-0). Now these students hope to stay that way as they advance to their final competition.

 

CKSD MONTESSORI PROGRAM: PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT
The CKSD Montessori program will host its annual Parent Information Night on Tuesday, March 8, in the Jackson Park Elementary library from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

SOPHOMORE INFORMATION NIGHT AT OHS
Olympic High School (OHS) will host an information night for current ninth-grade students who will be enrolling at OHS for the 2011-12 school year. Parents and students are invited to have dinner, attend the Olympic Fair, and learn more about academic opportunities at OHS.

 

CKHS EARNS ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Central Kitsap High School is one of only two high schools in the state to receive a 2011 Washington Achievement Award for Closing Achievement Gaps. The school was selected because its minority students (based on race and ethnicity) have performed as well or better than its majority groups over the last two years.

 

ANNUAL BUDGET UPDATE & FEEDBACK MEETINGS
CKSD will host two community meetings regarding the budget for the 2011-12 school year. Parents and community members are invited to attend to learn more more about the budget process and to provide feedback addressing next year's budget shortfall.

Jennifer Threadgold, a kindergarten teacher at Jackson Park Elementary, recently received an "Innovation in Education" award.

Governor Chris Gregoire has proclaimed January as School Board Recognition Month. Members of the CKSD Board of Directors were recognized by Superintendent Greg Lynch during the Board meeting on January 12.

Preliminary 2010 AYP data has been released by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, with another rise in the number of Washington state schools and districts now on the federal improvement list.

VOLUNTEER NEEDED FOR COMMUNITY FINANCE COMMITTEE
Central Kitsap School District is currently seeking a volunteer to fill a community member vacancy on its Community Finance Committee.

STUDENTS EARN GOLD, NOW HEADED TO NATIONALS
After placing first in its category ("Food Innovations") during a recent state competition, a Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) team from Klahowya Secondary School is now qualified to compete nationally. The students will present their entry--a new type of healthy, high fiber granola bar--during the FCCLA's National Leadership Conference in July.

LIVING VOICES: "NATIVE VISION"
The Seattle theater company Living Voices will present "Native Vision," a journey through history on May 24 in the KSS Auditorium. Admission is free. The CK Indian Education Program will host the fourth annual Honoring Ceremony for CKSD Native American graduates immediately following the "Native Vision" presentation.

STUDENTS OF THE MONTH
Twelve students were honored by the Kiwanis of Central Kitsap as Career & Technical Education (CTE) students of the month for March and April.

CKSD STUDENTS MEDAL AT STATE SKILLS USA COMPETITION
CKSD students competed at the Washington State SkillsUSA Skills and Leadership Conference April 15-17. Several students earned gold medals and are invited to attend and compete in the National Leadership and Skills Conference June 20-25.

CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR AND TEACHER OF THE YEAR
CKSD announced this year's Classified Employee of the Year, Rick Long, and Teacher of the Year, Karen Jensen, on May 10.

CKSD TO IMPLEMENT REDUCTION IN FORCE
During its meeting on April 28, the CKSD Board of Directors approved Resolution 15-09-10, authorizing a reduction in programs and services and a subsequent reduction in force.

BOOK FLOAT PARADE AT WOODLANDS ELEMENTARY
The students and staff of Woodlands Elementary School hosted the school's 25th annual Book Float Parade May 5.

Zakariya "Zak" Palsha was selected as the new assistant principal at Klahowya Secondary School.

CKJH EDUCATOR HONORED
Bruce Larson, a teacher and basketball coach at Central Kitsap Junior High School, was honored by the Silverdale Chamber of Commerce with an "Excellence in Education" award.

After a successful regional competition, ten teams from CKSD are on their way to the Destination ImagiNation state competition.

TEACHER HONORED FOR OUTSTANDING MUSIC CONTRIBUTIONS
Jeremy Faxon, a music educator at Fairview Junior High and Woodlands Elementary School, is the 2010 Washington Music Educator Association (WMEA) Outstanding Music Educator of the Year for the Olympic Region.

SOPHOMORE INFORMATION NIGHT AT OHS
Olympic High School will host an Information Night on Tuesday, March 2, for students who will be enrolling for the 2010-11 school year and their families.

"FANG" GOES TO WASHINGTON, DC
When Pat Nicholson, head custodian at Brownsville Elementary School, became the inaugural recipient of the national C.L.E.A.N. award last spring, it was his friend "Fang" who claimed the spotlight.

FRIENDLY COMPETITION FOR A GOOD CAUSE
Students in the National Junior Honor Society at Klahowya Secondary School found a way to help those in need in their own community and increase school spirit in the process.

NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP FINALISTS
Three CKSD students have achieved finalist status in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program. Winners will be announced beginning in April.

LOCAL ROTARIES HONORED FOR DONATION
In a combined effort, the Rotary Clubs of East Bremerton, Silverdale and Silverdale Sunrise donated 799 dictionaries to CKSD third-grade students.

CKSD is pleased to thank the community for its continued support. Preliminary results show voters in the February 9 special election passed the School Support Replacement Levy with an approval rate of 61.61%.

6-12 NEW MATH CURRICULUM REVIEW
Parents and community members are invited to review and provide input on a new math curriculum for grades 6 through 12.

MONTESSORI PROGRAM: PARENT INFORMATION NIGHTS
The CKSD Montessori program will host Parent Information Nights on February 18 and March 9 (6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.) at Jackson Park Elementary School.

LANGUAGE FAIR COMING TO CKSD
The CKSD World Language Department will sponsor a "Language Fair" on Friday, February 19, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Olympic High School.

CKHS ATHLETE NAMED RUNNER OF THE YEAR
Shane Moskowitz, a senior at Central Kitsap High School, was named 2009-10 Gatorade Washington Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year.

KSS STUDENT WINS STATE AWARD, NOW HEADED TO DC
Anthony Zendejas, a senior at Klahowya Secondary School, is the first-place winner of the state VFW Voice of Democracy audio/essay contest. He was awarded $1,700 in scholarships and two trips to Washington, D.C.

The Central Kitsap Junior High School cheer squad placed first at the Harbor Fest competition, held January 9 at Peninsula High School.

HONORING BLACK HISTORY MONTH
The national touring exhibit Frederick Douglass from Slavery to Freedom: the Journey to New York City will be on display in the Klahowya Secondary School Library during February. It will be open to the public on February 5, February 18 and February 22 (see press release for times).

Twelve educators were honored by the CKSD Board of Directors for attaining National Board Certification--a record number for the District.

CKSD RECEIVES STATE ENERGY GRANT
CKSD was awarded an Energy Efficiency grant worth $500,000 (the top amount) through the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.

OHS SEE SUCCESS WITH "SENIOR BOARDS"
When Olympic High School put out a call for volunteers to serve on the school's Culminating Project Boards, they hoped to involve at least 30 community members--and far exceeded their expectations.

HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION RATES AMONG BEST IN STATE
Central Kitsap School District is ranked third among the 50 largest school districts in the state for on-time graduation and first for extended graduation.

CULINARY RIVALRIES HEAT UP AT RIJH

CKDS conducted its count for state transportation funding from October 5 through October 9.
