(Activities taken from Mathematics a Guide for Parents to Everyday Mathematics and Helping Your Child at Home Grades K-6, published by Central Kitsap School District Department of Curriculum and Instruction, 2000.)
Guess My Rule
- In this game, sort items, objects, or numbers and invite your child to guess your rule for sorting them (e.g., by color, size or shape, etc.). Then your child can sort the items and you can guess the rule.
Who's There?
- In this game, pretend there are some animals behind a fence. You can see their heads sticking out at the top and their feet sticking out at the bottom. If you count four heads and twelve feet, what animals could be behind the fence? Have your child list groups of animals that can have four heads and twelve feet. Some possible combinations are: Three horses and one fish; one cat, one standing bear, one dog, one bird; one lion, one tiger, one monkey; one spider, two ducks, and one dolphin.
Guess My Word
- Think of a three-letter word for your child to guess. As your child guesses a word, respond with dictionary order--does your child's guess come before or after your word in the dictionary? When your child correctly guesses, switch roles and have him/her select the word for you to guess. To increase the challenge, you can limit the number of guesses or increase the size of the word to be guessed to a four- or five-letter word.
