Domino Dots Show the Ways

(Activities taken from Mathematics a Guide for Parents to Everyday Mathematics and Helping Your Child at Home Grades K-6, published by Central Kitsap School District Department of Curriculum and Instruction, 2000.)

Domino Dots

  • Examine the dot patterns on dominoes containing one to six dots. Have your child imagine that he/she needs to create the dominoes for seven though nine dots. You can begin by asking your child where to place the extra dot from six to seven. You can have available "dots" from a paper punch, stick-on dots, or counters in order to make patterns for the 7,8, or 9 dominoes.

Show the Ways

  • Use two colors of Unifix cubes or other manipulatives to show all the ways to make the number 5, such as four reds and one green. Draw pictures of each combination. Ask, "How are the pictures alike? Different? What patterns do you see?" Your child can do this for other numbers.
