  • Talk to your child. Keep lines of communication open--even when it is tough.
  • Discuss school safety procedures and discipline policies with your child. Show your support for the rules and help your child understand the reasons for them.
  • Communicate with your child’s school principal, counselor, or teacher about student or school concerns or ideas.
  • Help your child find ways to express anger or frustration without threatening or harming others. Model appropriate problem-solving and emotional responses for your child.
  • Volunteer at your child’s school to support classroom instruction, school activities, or safety efforts.
  • Be involved in your child’s school life by supporting and reviewing homework, talking with teachers, and attending school functions.
  • Be knowledgeable about how your child is spending his/her free time. Know your child’s activities and friends.
  • Get to know your child’s friends and the names of their parents.
  • Be familiar with your child’s surroundings and belongings—in the bedroom, home, and car.
  • Maintain your home computer in a public area—such as a family room. Monitor the internet sites accessed by your child from home.
  • Use school and community resources to provide support for your child. If you find your child to be displaying disturbing behaviors—get help. Talk with a trusted professional in your child’s school or the community.
  • Listen to your child when he/she shares concerns about friends who may be exhibiting troubling behaviors. Share this information with a trusted professional such as a school psychologist, counselor, or administrator.
  • Contact school and law enforcement officials with any information that may be relevant to ensuring student safety.
  • Use the anonymous WeTip Hotline, (800)-78-CRIME or the Crime Stoppers Hotline, (800) 882-4535, to report school related criminal information.
  • Be sure any firearms and/or explosives in the home are secure.
