English Language Learner (ELL)
Central Kitsap's ELL program strives to help English learners develop English language proficiency while maintaining academics at grade level.
Central Kitsap's English language learners remain at their home school and are part of the basic education classes and school environment. They receive assistance in learning their new language from our ELL instructional assistants and their classroom teachers. Students receive language development instruction in two types of settings. Assistants support learning in the classroom by working side-by-side with a student, or they can pull students out of the classroom to work on specific skills or to front-load information for a lesson that will be done later in the classroom.
ELL support focuses on language development and supports content learning from the regular classroom.
Central Kitsap ELD staff work to ensure that "All Students Learn Well."
The process of acquiring a new language is like the process we go through when we learn our first language. English learners usually start with a pre-production, or silent period, when first introduced to English. During this period, students begin to understand English, but usually don't yet attempt to speak it. This period can last from a few days to many months, depending on the student.
As ELLs continue to acquire English, they begin to produce one or two word phrases, and then move to sentences. As students are learning English, they will often struggle with grammar and pronunciation, but our emphasis should be on meaning, not grammatical perfection. The State of Washington has determined English language proficiency levels that describe English learners as they acquire English.
