Elementary General Information
The Elementary Summer School Program is designed for students in grades 1-6. Course offerings are designed for the purpose of providing participants the opportunity to broaden their horizons through exploration, skill maintenance and enhancement, and review. We provide a positive learning opportunity for all students.
Students and enrollment: Tuition-based classes are open to students from any school district upon payment of tuition and completion of registration.
Location of classes: Elementary courses will be held at
PineCrest Elementary School, 5530 Pine Road., Bremerton.

Attendance: Regular and consistent attendance is necessary in order for students to gain maximum benefit from their classes.

or delivered to the Curriculum Office, Jenne-Wright Administration Center,
9210 Silverdale Way, Silverdale.
Full payment
must be made at the time of registration.
Registration forms must be received by Thursday, July 10 at 3 pm. Refunds will be given if a class is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. NO refunds will be given after July 17 unless a class is cancelled.
Scholarship: Partial scholarships are available to those who
qualify for Free/Reduced Lunch. Applications are available at school
offices, the Curriculum Office, and by
clicking here.
Transportation: Limited transportation will be available. A bus will stop at each CKSD elementary school. Specific schedules will be mailed with your registration confirmation.

FIRST GRADE READING |

Struggling readers
who were first graders during the 2007-2008 school year may be selected and
invited by their teacher to participate in this reading intervention/remediation
program. First-grade teachers provide input in determining eligibility utilizing student performance data. This is
an intensive program designed to improve the reading skills of students with
reading deficits who are not ready for the next grade level of instruction. |

READING AND WRITING CAMP |

Tuition: $190 |
Students will be
placed in age- and skill-level groups for intensive reading and writing
assistance. Instruction will target improving reading skills, decoding, fluency, and
comprehension. Writing is integral to the
literacy learning process and will also be a focus. Student learning will
be enriched with a variety of reading materials and engaging literature.
Although classes are designed primarily
for students who are struggling with grade-level reading materials, students who
are at grade-level would also benefit from exposure to the reading and
writing strategies that will be taught.

| MATH CAMP |

Students will be placed in age- and skill-level groups for
intensive mathematics experiences. Lessons will focus on nationally accepted standards. Students will develop mathematic concepts through problem solving and skills work.
Students will apply and extend their knowledge of mathematics through puzzles, games, and literature projects to foster
a positive attitude and enjoyment of mathematics. |

Science Camp is designed to provide students with “hands-on” experiences in science. Students will broaden their understanding of scientific method and inquiry. Lessons are planned to stimulate interest and excitement in science.

This is a non-credit course recommended for students who wish to improve mathematical skills and understanding — important for a successful Algebraic Thinking 1 or 2 experience. This course will be most useful for students who have experienced challenges in their 6th or 7th grade math classes.

This course is based on the Essential Learning Requirements for physical education for grades 7 and 8. It is designed to replace the P.E. course that is required to be taken in those grade levels and is open to students in 6th or 7th grade during 2007-08. Students will be required to suit up daily. |

This course is for Central Kitsap School District students who have completed 10th grade, attempted the High School Math WASL at least once, and have not yet met the math standard. Instruction will focus on the math skills needed for graduation. Students who enroll in this course should plan to retake the High School Math WASL on August 12.

Physical fitness is emphasized in this course. Daily active participation in individual, recreational and team sports will be used to establish fitness techniques and habits. Students will demonstrate leadership and creativity by constructing individual exercise programs including flexibility, strength, and endurance. Skill development, strategies and knowledge will be taught. Students will be required to suit up daily.

Areas of study include fitness, nutrition, effects of exercise, health, and stress management. The class includes a combination of classroom and physical activity, with development of individual goals and objectives. Cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, and endurance development will be emphasized, with pre- and post-physical testing.

This class is designed for students who need to further develop their reading and writing skills. Students are provided with reading and writing instruction based on their learning needs. Students who would benefit from taking this course are current 7th and 8th graders who have demonstrated a need for additional reading and writing instruction through WASL scores or classroom based assessments in the student’s current language arts class. Students who were in 8th grade, desiring to move to 9th grade, but have not yet passed at least one semester of language arts, may take this course to fulfill the promotion requirement.

This class is designed specifically for students who failed one or both semesters of English during the 07-08 school year. Those who failed both semesters need a .5 English credit to meet requirements for promotion to Grade 10. The focus will be on skills necessary to be successful in future English and Literature classes.

This course is for Central Kitsap School District students who have completed 10th grade, attempted the High School Writing WASL at least once, and have not yet met the writing standard. Instruction focuses on writing skills specific to student needs. Students who enroll in this course should plan to retake the High School Writing WASL on August 13 & 14.

This class is for students short of English credits, but have met the Reading and Writing WASL standard. Students will read, discuss, and analyze 20th century literature. Readings will come from diverse cultures and time periods.

This class helps students discover the environment through readings, labs, field work, and projects. Study will focus on the Earth (inside and out), atmosphere, hydrosphere, and their relationship to the biosphere. Students will gain an appreciation for our planet, knowledge of environmental responsibility, and understanding of how science is done.

Recommended for students who have passed only one semester of U.S. History, and need to recover a semester credit. An inquiry-based research project may be required. The teacher will focus on essential learnings taught in U.S. History.

The purpose of this course is to provide students the opportunity to identify their strengths and interests and then apply these to their plans for after high school. This course is also designed to teach students how to apply and interview for jobs and other related situations; including the admissions process for the school they plan to attend for education/training in their chosen career. Students will develop a personal statement, letter of application, resume, fill out job applications and assess their skills as related to the employment world. In this course students will complete the Culminating Project and High School and Beyond Plan graduation requirements. This course is only open to students in the classes of 2008 and 2009.

Students will review basic touch-typing skills, build speed and accuracy on the keyboard, format letters, reports, and tables using Microsoft Word. Students will create multimedia presentations using PowerPoint, use scanners and digital cameras, create and manipulate spreadsheets using Excel and databases using Access, and become familiar with the basic concepts of file management and web design.

In this class students have access to a variety of 35 mm and digital cameras. Students learn to effectively compose photos using the rule of thirds, horizon lines, balance, grouping, leading lines, framing, selective focus, and lighting techniques. In the laboratory, students learn to import and edit photos using scanners and computer editing programs. Photo journalism assignments include: candid, group, panorama, and action shoots. Occasional out of class photo assignments may be necessary. Students explore related audio/visual media career opportunities in the fields of photo-journalism, commercial digital photography, computer graphics, fine art photography, and video production.

These courses offer students the ability to earn credit at their own pace and may be completed at school and/or at home. They require a student to be able to work independently. This is a system that is able to meet course needs if a course is not offered during summer school. Subjects include World History, Washington State History, and Health.
