Key Committee Questions

Key questions help guide the collection of relevant facts and the development of sub-criteria

  1. What are the state requirements for the ARTS?
  2. What does CKSD require for Graduation in the ARTS?
  3. What are the core elements for a quality music program (elementary, secondary, curriculum/co-curricular)?
  4. What are the current program opportunities at each feeder school?
    • Are each of these programs preparing students for a CBPA?
  5. How does our program compare to other school districts of the same size in WA State?
  6. What options should be considered to reduce program costs, yet maintain a quality music program?

Facts
  • Fulfills a core requirement
  • Secondary music teachers can teach more students per class than other teachers which allows other courses to run at lower class sizes
  • Attracts and maintains students to CKSD
  • Consistent connection with staff over years
  • State Core Academic Requirements
  • RCW 28A.150.210 – State Learning Goals – Arts is Basic Education and included as an Essential Academic Learning Requirement (EALR) (dance, music, theatre, and visual arts)
  • NCLB/ESEA – Arts Education is Federal Law and a “core” academic subject area
  • WAC 180-51-061 – Minimum requirements for high school graduation for the freshman class of 2004—graduating class of 2008 and beyond, including the new Arts high school graduation requirements for one full year of study in The Arts, aligned to benchmark 3 and/or above of The Arts EALRs and non-substitutable
  • CKSD Elementary Music Offerings
  • General Music to most ADK-6 grade students
  • Band offered to all 5-6 grade students
  • Orchestra offered at 8 out of 12 schools
    • Brownsville, Clear Creek, Cottonwood, Cougar Valley, Emerald Heights, Esquire Hills, PineCrest, Silver Ridge
  • Three out of the twelve elementary schools use the choice model (instrumental music or general music not both)
  • Several schools that used to use the choice model, switched back to not using it
  • Elementary music schedules are not consistent across the district
  • The strings program has only been in our school district since 1994
  • Choir is held outside of the school day in elementary schools
  • We have a standards based report card that music teachers use
  • Fifth grade strings enrollment has increased 11% in the past six years, and 6th grade enrollment has increased 4%
  • 80% of the district enrollment of 5th graders participate in instrumental music, and 52% at the 6th grade level
  • Fifth grade band enrollment has decreased 4%, sixth grade band has stayed constant despite overall enrollment decline. This is a slower pace of decline than that of the overall enrollment numbers.
  • Music will be the only arts program covering the state CBPA district wide with all 5th graders
