A Note from the Superintendent

Dear Parents and Community Members,

Thank you for your support of the recent community budget forums. Attendance at each of these events was outstanding! A total of 240 individuals participated over the course of three days. We appreciate the time you took to join the 2012-13 school year budget discussion. Your voice counts!

The purpose of January’s forums was to provide our community with a better understanding of our current budget situation. We wanted you to have a chance to ask questions and to speak directly with us and with each other. Most importantly, we were hoping you’d share your input and suggestions. And you did!

We are still working through the budget input we received. So far, we’ve been able to identify at least one area that stands out. Early findings show that participants chose to fund many items that contained multiple funding levels. In many cases participants chose to fund items at a lower rate from current levels.

Please remember that no decisions have been made. The Legislature is still in session and is scheduled to end on March 8. Until then, we won’t know how the state budget will affect our final shortfall amount for next year.

In addition, Heavy Impact (HI) funds and the Supplemental School Support Levy (SSSL) play a role in the budget process. We are continuing our work to restore HI. The SSSL outcome on Feb 14, state budget decisions and potential restoration of HI will define what CKSD programs are actually reduced or eliminated. Final budget decisions are not possible until we have answers to questions that are currently beyond our direct control!

In the meantime, your feedback remains a critical part of our budget process. We will continue analyzing your input and those results will be shared with you and our community within the next several weeks.

We are facing some difficult decisions. The tremendous support I saw during these budget forums was an encouraging reminder that, "Together we make a difference!"

Sincerely,

Greg Lynch
